Elvhenanmeaning "place of our people" in the elven languagewas the original civilization of the elvesor elvhen. It covered most of Thedas [2]from the city of Arlathan to FereldenOrlais and lands west of Orlais. The Dalish retained vague memories of early history, when elven gods walked the earth [4]spoke to the people [2] and provided them with knowledge [5]counsel and protection [6]while the people prayed and made offerings to them [7] amongst lush forests and ancient trees.

They were not immortal, but they did not suffer from deterioration of mind or body. It is said that elves built multiple cities. As a result, human scholars came to believe that it was the only elven settlement of note. According to the elven calendar, they made first contact with the dwarves in Ancient. The Dalish tell that when humans first arrived, elves named them "shemlen", or "quicklings" for their short life span.

Elves viewed the other race as brash, warlike and impatient. They contracted human diseases, some of which proved lethal. Furthermore, those who spent time with the humans found themselves aging. Fearful, elves immediately moved to close Elvhenan off from the humans to preserve their civilization.

But it was almost too late. As the human Tevinter Imperium rose to power, they moved to conquer Arlathan aided, it is said, by demons and dragon thralls. According to the Dalish, when the city was breached their ancestors chose to flee rather than fight. Then Tevinter magisters used their great destructive power to force the very ground to swallow Arlathan whole. Elves were enslavedand human contact quickened their veins until every captured elf turned mortal.

The Dalish attribute the failure of their gods to protect the people to the trickster god Fen'Harelwho had deceived both the elven pantheon and their nemeses, the Forgotten Onesand had trapped them in heaven and in the abyssrespectively.

Ancient ruins. Elves were once a race comprised of beautiful, ethereal immortals who lived in harmony with nature and who never changed. Ancient memories tell of a city of blue glass spires and enormous green parks, with figures strolling along the pearly, glowing strips as if they walked on solid ground [23] and bodies of lovers colliding in the air in an endless dance.

Out of the 30, drow who made up the city's population, around 3, survived the disaster. It is considered by most to be the furthest reach of civilization, the Spine of the World Mountains which mark what most believe to be the end of the known world this is of course not true as the Ten Towns of Icewind Dale lie past them being just a couple of hundred miles north of the city.

Most of its inhabitants, however, couldn't care less. Luskan is a port town frequented by pirates, thieves and other disreputable folk interested in only one thing: money. Although you could be murdered, mugged or kidnapped at any moment within its walls, Luskan is a very lucrative city. Pirates bring in their booty to be sold to the black market, northern traders frequent the place as a rest stop on their way to the aforementioned Ten towns during the warmer months, ready to buy exotic scrimshander ornaments, several taverns do a roaring trade in ale and other spirits, the drugs and slave trade are rife although obviously sublimated and information brokers and prostitutes ply their trade during the night-time.

In the game Neverwinter Nights which is not considered canon, in the year DR the High Captains were either killed or forced to flee during a vicious civil war caused by a cultist named Maugrim, who planned on using Luskan's might against the city of Neverwinter. The true power in the city actually resides in the Host Tower of the Arcane. The loosely affiliated mages use the High Captains as puppet rulers, mostly keeping to themselves and working on their own magical experiments.

They encourage the harassment of the trading routes of small cities such as LongsaddleMirabar and Neverwinter although they stay well clear of Waterdeep and Amn 's routes.

They also encourage local traders to treat travellers with disdain and suspicion, in the possibility that they may be spies for their enemies, often sending agents to follow strangers personally.

Luskan will be the main setting of The Pirate King novel by R. The city's Shield Dwarves live underground to oversee their workshops. The humans above cooperate with the Dwarves to handle the mining, move the ore to market and defend the city against magical threats. The nominal ruler of Mirabar is a hereditary marchion, but the true power is in an assembly called the Council of Sparkling Stones, a Dwarven and Human group that meets once a year to determine target production quotas and whether or not to threaten current clients with reduced output.

The city itself stands on a knoll on the north banks of the river Mirar. It is linked by good roads to its major mines in the Spine of the World mountains. These mines yield up almost all known metals and gemstones so they are guarded against Orc and monster raids by a standing army, the axe of Mirabar. The craftsmen of Mirabar also work the stone and metals taken out of the mines, transporting the stone to Luskan magically for an exorbitant cost to be shipped to the south, the worthless stone is crushed to improve the city's roads.

This means that the city is the richest city north of Waterdeep. After years of actively opposing it, the city finally joined the Zhentarim. So that is the part I want to most highlight, though all of it is great. The most crucial element to understanding an elf's mindset, though, is to understand long-time and short-time. The elf brain does not perceive time and receive information in the same fashion that most other humanoids do; elves live much of their adult life in a pseudo-trance known as long-timein which they can idle away days or weeks at a time without devoting significant mental focus to anything.

As creatures with a lifespan measured in centuries, elves have a lot of time available to waste on getting things right, and long-time is the biological mechanism that allows them to do it. An elf is in long-time whenever there is nothing stressful that requires true focus.

Elves in long-time can eat, drink, read, play music, craft woodwork or even hunt game or fight goblins if they are sufficiently at ease with the task at hand. A sort of mental auto-pilot, long-time supplements the elven need to trance by allowing elves to keep their minds at ease while developing muscle memory and picking up on subtle nuances and details that stand out as relevant. Elves in long-time can devote themselves to a given pursuit for anywhere from a week to several years without even having to notice what they are doing.

Long-time is a fluid, waking dream; peaceful, functional and allowing the acquisition of experience over a long period of time. Elves can do many things while in long-timebut unless stressed, they will not be devoting the necessary focus to noticing much of what they're about.

That Lolth is a fallen elf goddess is well-known, but what is often forgotten is that she was the elf goddess of passion and destiny. Now that she has reclaimed her divinity, Lolth still controls a twisted version of her old portfolio but rarely exercises it.

The loss of Araushnee's portfolio has been a direct contributor to the stagnation and slow decline of the elven people, and one that Corellon cannot rectify. The only hope for the elves lies in finding those whose essence was not scoured - the few who were taken by Gruumsh when he stole away the Misty Isle. This too goes a long way to explaining elves, their almost passive contentment, and their ceaseless hatred for Lolth and her drow. Your best bet is the published books. These are both "expansion" books that further detail the races.

I would recommend starting with the PHBmaybe moving onto the Tome of Foes if you really want to get into the history and the origins of races.

The Tome of Foes has fantastic lore for the Elves and Dwarves especially. This Forgotten Realms novel gives an excellent sense of the background and psychology of elves, including their patience, longevity, capacity for violence, interactions with humans, and how they treat half-elves. You should be able to find this book cheaply used on Amazon.

When the Netherese mage Karsus inadvertently slew Mystryl in an attempt to usurp her position as god of magic, the Weave of Toril shut down for several minutes.

In order to survive, the Guardian of Illefarn turned to the Shadow Weave for sustenance, and became corrupted by Shar 's influence. When the high mages of Illefarn realised what happened, they made numerous attempts to destroy the Guardian, but perished in vain.

The conflict led to the collapse of the fragile nation. Ilythiir was the ancient elven empire of the dark-skinned, tropical elves who became the drow. Imaskar was the first overpowering human empire, predating even Netheril. It was responsible for the creation of the oldest empires still in existence, the ancient empires of MulhorandUnther and Chessenta.

They were the first astronomers and the first to give names to the planets. Their artificer-kings held tremendous power and respect, leading forays into other planes to bring back otherworldy slaves for use in building the cities of Imaskar one such plane was Earth's. The landscape of Khorvaire varies greatly, from wastelands and forbidding mountains in the north to deserts and jungles in the south, with everything in between. Khorvaire is a large continent with many nations and autonomous regions.

The borders of many of these areas are disputed, despite having been determined in the Treaty of Thronehold. Many races make Khorvaire their home. The continent's largest cities are melting pots of many different species and cultures. Humans are actually not native to Khorvaire, having emigrated from the continent of Sarlona thousands of years ago.

However, since then they have come to dominate the continent, both in numbers and power. Humans founded the Five Nationsand most of them still live in those areas.

The breakdown of the Kingdom of Galifar was in fact what started the Last War. Dwarves are native to the Mror Holds. The largest dwarven settlements are there, but they can be found throughout the continent. Strong familial and clan ties are the core of Dwarf society. Aside from being expert craftsmen and artisans, dwarves are also the financial experts of Khorvaire, using the wealth of their mines as collateral for a successful banking system as administered by House Kundarak. The dwarves of Khorvaire have mastered the art of corporate warfare and use it far more than bloodshed to meet their goals.

Elves are not native to Khorvaire, either. There are three distinct cultural groups of elves that can be found on Khorvaire:. Gnomes are native to Zilargoand can be found throughout the continent. While typically friendly and charming, gnomes are also prone to engaging in deception and enjoy 'games' of intrigue. The scale of these games can be great or small, from discovering gossip about a fellow townsman to trafficking in state secrets.

However, the other races tend to underestimate gnomes with their friendly ways and small stature. Above all, gnomes are an extremely social folk who work hard to keep their families and society intact.

To that end, the gnomish House Sivis works in diplomacy and communications, helping to keep the greater society of Khorvaire intact. From the smallest family and circle of friends to national treaties and major corporate contracts, House Sivis members work very hard to keep the continent connected. Goblinshobgoblinsand bugbears once ruled most of Khorvaire, before human settlement. Though only ruins remain of most of their empire, some are attempting to rebuild it in Darguun.

Much like Valenar, Darguun was once part of Cyre, before it was captured by hobgoblin mercenaries in the Last War. Many goblinoids can also be found in the nation of Droaam. Goblins exist as an impoverished underclass in many human cities. Also, hobgoblins and bugbears employed as mercenaries by House Deneith are common in conflict across the continent. Half-elves are common in Khorvaire as a distinct race, called the Khoravar. Most are descendents of elves who came to the continent with the elven Dragonmarked Houses.

Many Khoravar are associated with the half-elven Houses, Medani and Lyrandar. Due to their association with House Lyrandar, Khoravar can be found nearly everywhere in Khorvaire. Halflings are native to the Talenta Plains. The halflings that live there have a very traditional, nomadic, tribal lifestyle. Halflings who have migrated to large cities tend to be more cosmopolitan and human-like culturally. Orcs and their progeny, the half-orcshave inhabited the western part of Khorvaire for millennia.

There are also forests in The North near Waterdeep with elven populations. Google will give you info on all of those. Most FR elves retreated to Evermeet, but started coming back a few hundred years ago.
